Congratulations on being a finalist! How does it feel to be recognised in this year’s Gift of the Year awards? It feels absolutely surreal! Reaching the finals for the second year running is such an honour, but this year is extra special because it’s the first product Allison and I have collaborated on since officially becoming a mother-daughter team. To have our combined professional experience recognised by such an esteemed panel of judges is a huge ‘pinch-me’ moment for us.

Can you tell us a little about your brand and the inspiration behind your successful product? Sunshine Lane was born from a desire to create gifts that support us through life’s 'meh' moments. The brand’s roots are quite personal; following a late-in-life autism diagnosis and navigating chronic illness, I began creating tools to manage my own wellbeing. However, it quickly became clear that the need for accessible, empathetic support is universal.

By merging my Social Work background with my mum Allison’s expertise as a Mental Health Nurse, we created our Anxiety Toolkit range. We currently offer both an Original and a Teen Edition, providing tactile, screen-free resources that translate clinical strategies into something beautiful and accessible.

What makes your product special, and why do you think it stood out to the judges? I think it stood out because it’s a 'functional gift' that doesn't compromise on aesthetics. While the design is vibrant and giftable, the content is deeply impactful - so much so that we’ve seen a surge in mental health professionals purchasing them to use as tangible resources for their own clients. That professional endorsement, combined with the fact that it’s a physical, screen-free tool in an increasingly digital world, makes it a very unique offering in the wellbeing category. It’s not just a thoughtful gesture; it’s a practical investment in someone’s headspace.

Who is your product designed for, and what kind of reaction have you had from customers so far? The beauty of the toolkits is their versatility; they are designed for anyone needing a moment of calm in their pocket. While our Teen Edition is a lifeline for young people navigating the pressures of exams and social media, the Original toolkit is being used by everyone from busy parents to professionals managing workplace stress.

The reaction has been really moving. We’ve heard from customers who carry them in their bags as a 'safety net' for travel and social anxiety, giving them the confidence to step out of their comfort zones. From a retail perspective, the feedback has been just as strong - we’re seeing incredible 'sell-through' rates, with several independent shops reporting that they’ve become a go-to recommendation for customers looking for a gift with real substance.

What trends or themes do you think are shaping the gifting industry right now? We are seeing a wonderful shift toward 'Intentional Gifting.' More than ever, people are looking for items that foster a genuine connection or offer support long after the wrapping paper is gone. Gifting is becoming a way to say, 'I see you, and I’m in your corner.'

There is also a significant movement toward authenticity and lived experience. Customers are seeking out brands with a 'why' behind them - they want products designed by people who truly understand the challenges they are solving. While wellbeing used to be seen as a luxury or a 'pamper' trend, it’s now an everyday essential. We’re seeing a growing demand for inclusive, thoughtful tools that acknowledge the diverse ways our minds work, making mental health support a standard part of the modern gift shop.

How has being shortlisted, and now being a finalist impacted your brand so far, and what do you hope to achieve from the awards? The impact on our retail partnerships has been immediate. It has given new stockists the confidence to trial the range, and we’ve seen exceptional sell-through rates, with many reordering within weeks. We hope these awards help us reach even more independent boutiques and wellness retailers, ensuring these tools get into the hands of those who need them most.

What exciting plans do you have for the future? It’s a busy time at Sunshine Lane! Now that we are officially a mother-daughter team, we are deep in the R&D phase for new additions to our toolkit range, as well as expanding our stationery and gifting ranges.

Having established several successful greeting card collections focused on support, empathy, and ‘thinking of you’ moments, we are now expanding into the broader occasions market. We want to be there for our customers' celebrations just as much as their challenges, providing a complete range of cards that balance our signature empathy with a joyful, celebratory spirit.

We’re also looking to grow our physical retail presence across the UK and are working on some very exciting new partnerships that will help bring our mission of accessible wellbeing to an even wider audience!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received (or given), and why? The best gift I’ve ever received was a simple 'check-in' hamper from a friend during a particularly difficult time with my health. It wasn’t the cost of the items, but the fact that she’d chosen things she knew would specifically comfort me - my favourite tea, a cute mug, a cosy pair of socks, and a handwritten note. It’s exactly that feeling of being 'seen' and supported that we try to capture in every product we create at Sunshine Lane.
