Tell us about your business

London-based Makers Cabinet was established in 2017 by Odin Ardagh, Noah Bier and Benjamin Weininger, while graduates in Product Design at Central Saint Martins. Launched and funded with a Kickstarter campaign, the brand has developed a range of innovative, crafted tools for creators, gaining an international customer base of architects, designers, artists and stationery aficionados. It regularly collaborates with fellow creatives, makers and like-minded brands.

Built to last and beautifully crafted in two material options of brushed solid brass and anodised aluminium, the refillable, high-quality ballpoint has a minimalist design and pleasing weight, grip, and finish, utilising a patent-pending mechanism of two diametrically-opposed neodymium magnets to create an original and satisfying piece of activation engineering, resulting in a first-class click.

Named in wry homage to László Bíró, patentor of the world’s most ubiquitous writing tool, LAZLO, is perfectly paired with the highest quality ballpoint pen insert made by Schmidt in Germany for a smooth writing experience and is further compatible with most Euro-style inserts. Packaged in recyclable tubing, Lazlo comes with a natural cork drop stand for on-desk presentation and storage.

LAZLO is the sixth addition to Makers Cabinet’s collection of highly crafted, long-lasting and collectible tools for creators, which began in 2017 with Høvel, its best-selling solid brass pencil sharpener and has continued with Iris, a Circular Drawing Tool; Stria, a Foldable Ruler; and Ferrule, a Pencil Extender, all made in solid brass.

Why did you choose to enter the GOTY competition? have you entered in the past and has it helped your brand grow?

Last year we were shortlisted for Ferrule. This year we return with the aim of winning the coveted award. We would like to win to continue to grow our brand's presence within the industry and promote lifetime-designed products that counteract the notion of planned obsolescence.

What other products will you be bringing to market in 2023

In 2023 we are looking to bring out our collaboration with 886 by the Royal Mint. This sees Makers Cabinet work with an over thousand-year-old company to produce our designs in the United Kingdom.

We will be launching our first lamp products too which are designed entirely in line with the circular economy and will be the perfect lighting companion to your Makers Cabinet desk tools.

Later in the year we will be releasing our sixth stationery product which proves to be the most exciting one yet!

Where can your products be purchased?

Our products are available to purchase at makerscabinet.com as well as at leading art supplies stores including London Graphic Centre and Jackson's Art Supplies. They can also be found in boutique and department stores like Fortnum and Mason.
